This was an inexpensive unit and when it’s working it sounds great. But every once in awhile it goes into “eject lock” or “demo mode”. It was difficult finding a solution to fix it. I found online if you hold the stop button for more than 10 seconds it goes back to normal. Now, maybe a year and half later, sometimes it just won’t turn on. I have to pull the plug out of the power supply for awhile and then plug it back it. The sound would then work, but the menu wouldn’t come up so I couldn’t play the DVD I had stuck in it. 30 minutes after I gave up on the dvd it just popped out. One day a music dvd that was left in the system just started playing for no reason. I won’t pay $70 to send it back and fix it, it wasn’t that expensive to start with. Don’t buy it, not worth the headache if it starts acting up.

I have a medium sized bedroom, and will soon be owning a pretty large living room, own TWO of these. Why?! They are perfect space-savers, probably the nicest-looking 2.1’s I’ve ever seen, and easily crush any PC speaker setups you could own.

For some, it will be a pain to not see the interface, but when I thump this baby, my cousin has to blare his LG 5.1 Blu-Ray system in order to hear over the “thudd” of my little-bitty 2.1’s. But they are not too bass-heavy, good for voice chatter and movie effects, great audio quality (even from just normal audio cable).

Got mine for a random Best Buy clearance sale, had them 3 years, except for a few random DVD-R burned home movies, no problems at all. Not sure if I’d buy brand new, but definitely worth the $. Don’t use VSM!

  3. I have had this system for one year and it worked well at first then it would overheat and the picture would freeze. I would either have to turn it off and wait for it to cool off before I could continue watching the DVD or just get frustrated and give up. Now, the DVD will not eject and I have one stuck in the player. If you are thinking about buying this system, take my advice and keep looking, you will save some money as well as a big headache.

  4. Ordered from [...] and it was on sale at the time for $[...] with free shipping and no tax!

    THE SHIPPING:

I was skeptical and thought this may be a mistake but it arrived a week after I ordered it. Brand new, factory sealed. Opened it up and everything is intact, doesn’t seem like a factory refurb.

    INTERFACE:

The non-techs will have a problem with the interface. Its annoying but after a few minutes I caught on. You can’t plug an iPod directly in via USB but you can play it through the AUX with a Y cable. (stereo RCA to 3/4″ inch balanced) Looks great though. It definitely will not make your home theater LOOK any worse. Most images available don’t do it justice. Its obvious that LG understands that we want our electronics to also look good in our rooms. I have a large HDTV from LG and its sexy too.

    SOUND:

Sound is great. It sounds better in stereo then my $[...]+ Samsung system thats in my living room. The sound is great for a bedroom or small living room. Wouldn’t recommend it for a larger room. Tried it with a PS3 game and its awesome. It has a bonus digital optical input for sound. I agree with most reviews that the virtual surround sound feature is really just a gimmick. It sounds tinny and like they simply added reverb to the sound.

    HOOK UP:

Really different setup when comparing it with other HTIB’s. (home theater in a box) The amp, and most of the connections are located on the sub. Only the USB and HDMI ports are on the receiver which means you will have to store the sub close to the receiver, might be inconvenient. Proprietary speaker connectors but very clean simple design. I like that the whole unit only needs 1 power cord.

    OVERALL:

So far, so good. I am basing my utter joy off of the fact that I only paid $[...]. Not sure if I’d pay what its selling for right now. Then again, I already had an existing home theater and wanted something for my bedroom.

I have had this system for only 14 months. In that time I have had to send it back once, at a charge of $70, as it suddenly stopped responding – would not eject my dvd, turn off, anything. Now several months later it is doing it again, and LG will gladly “fix” it for another charge of $70! Now I have a useless dvd player with a dvd stuck inside of it. I’d rather destroy the machine to get my dvd out and go invest in something that works.
